Weekly Breadcrumb: Do What You Can

Posted on December 20, 2025December 20, 2025 by Kristen

Weekly Breadcrumb is a weekly series where I look back on what baking has taught me, shown me, or reminded me over the previous week. A lesson, or gift, I have received from baking.

This past week has been tiring. Between work and holiday things, it’s felt like a frenzy. Fortunately, I’m able to take a break and slow down a bit now.

As a result of having not enough time/energy, my baking this week has been pretty minimal. I really wanted some fresh bread a few days ago, and so I made some easy rolls with fresh-milled flour. I had made them once before with great success, but this time, something went wrong. The rolls didn’t rise right, and they just didn’t event seem like rolls. But I accepted it – this was all I could do this week. And I ate them anyway (a few of them).

Another similar lesson: we had a sports banquet to attend for our son, and I had signed up to bring cookies. Now, signing up to bring food usually means I make something from scratch. I imagined the homemade chocolate chip cookies we would bring. But as it turned out, we didn’t have the ingredients, and on the day we needed to attend the event, I had very little time.

So, I bought cookies at the store, and that was that. I felt a little disappointed in myself, buying cookies to bring to an event. But when we got there, the dessert table was filled with treats, and store-bought and homemade, and the kids seemed thrilled at all of the food. In retrospect, I was glad I didn’t try to make cookies from scratch on such a busy week.

Now that things are slowing down for a bit, I’m looking forward to enjoying some unhurried baking time!
